He has a Master's Degree in Conflict Analysis and Management from Royal Roads University and a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Southeast Asian Studies from the University of Victoria, Canada.
Nelson has over twelve years of experience in Southeast Asia working primarily as a journalist and political consultant. He has conducted extensive research on political conflict and armed insurgency in Burma, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Southern Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia. He is the author of the book "Conflict: Journeys through war and terror in Southeast Asia" and co-producer of the documentary film "The Longest War" about the Karen insurgency in Burma. He has a Master's Degree in Asia Pacific Policy Studies with a focus on Southeast Asian security issues and a Bachelor's Degree in Asian Studies, both from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.
John is a Burmese specialist with unique access to all areas of Burma and its borderline regions. His main background is in journalism. He previously worked as a fixer, translator and cameraman for CNN based in Bangkok. As a freelancer, he has provided footage to numerous broadcasters including CNN, Al Jazeera, BBC, Australia Network, France24, SF, and PBS among others. His extensive reportage from the country – often done at immense personal risk – has included the 2007 Saffron Revolution, Cyclone Nargis, the release of Aung San Suu Kyi, numerous features on social and environmental issues, animal trafficking in Wa State as well as frontline coverage of the country's numerous ethnic conflicts. He speaks Burmese, Thai, Mandarin, Malay and English.
